Nutritional and Lifestyle Approach
On our retreats we exclusively follow a plant-based nutrition approach. There is a very sound reason for this. There have been many huge studies which demonstrate that a diet high in plant derived foods and drinks is the very best for all measures of health and well-being. People who follow plant-based diets live more healthily - for much longer. This is vitally important - although as a society we are in general living longer and our life span is increasing, we are becoming sicker at much younger ages - so one could say that our 'health-span' is decreasing! The very sad reality of this is that if we don't take affirmative action to safeguard our health and that of our loved ones, we are facing years and years of chronic ill health - no one wants that!
One of the largest studies to date is the Adventist Health Study (AHS) which had 96,000 people fill out complex 50 page health questionnaires and the data gathered from this original study (begun in 1960) and subsequent studies which are ongoing, showed tremendous health and longevity benefits. The reason that Seventh Day Adventists were studies is that they generally live healthy lifestyles, are predominantly vegan or vegetarian and tend not to drink or smoke.
